چکیده

The details of a method used to determine the As(III)/As(V) ratio in soil by arsenic K-edge XANES spectroscopy are described. The spectra of mixtures of NaAs(III)O2 and NaH2As(V)O4, conducted for an As(III)/As(V) calibration, were well-fitted by combining normalized spectra of NaAsO2 and Na2HAsO4, where the coefficients multiplied by the normalized spectra were identical to the molar ratio of As(III) and As(V) in the mixtures. XANES spectra of arsenic in soil samples could also be fitted by a linear combination of the spectra of NaAsO2 and Na2HAsO4, which enabled us to estimate the As(III)/As(V) in a soil containing 10.2 mg/kg arsenic. The As(III)/As(V) ratio in the soil was compared with that of a soil solution contacted with the soil determined by HPLC-ICP-MS, showing that As(III) is distributed to water more readily than As(V). The application of the XANES method is important for a better understanding of the behavior of As(III) and As(V) independently in a natural aquifer.

Arsenic behavior in paddy fields during the cycle of flooded and non-flooded periods.

The behavior of As in paddy fields is of great interest considering high As contents of groundwater in several Asian countries where rice is the main staple. We determined the concentrations of Fe, Mn, and As in soil, soil water, and groundwater samples collected at different depths down to 2 m in an experimental paddy field in Japan during the cycle of flooded and non-flooded periods. In addit...

In Vitro Method To Assess Soil Arsenic Metabolism by Human Gut Microbiota: Arsenic Speciation and Distribution.

Arsenic (As) speciation and distribution are two important factors in assessing human health risk from As-contaminated soil. In this study, we used the combination of physiologically based extraction test (PBET) and Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME) to determine soil As metabolism by human gut microbiota. The results showed that the percentage of soil arsenate [As(V)] tr...

Arsenic speciation and reactivity in poultry litter.

Recent U.S. government action to lower the maximum concentration levels (MCL) of total arsenic (As) (10 ppb) in drinking water has raised serious concerns about the agricultural use of As-containing biosolids such as poultry litter (PL). In this study, solid-state chemical speciation, desorbability, and total levels of As in PL and long-term amended soils were investigated using novel synchrotr...

Multiscale assessment of methylarsenic reactivity in soil. 2. Distribution and speciation in soil.

Methylated forms of arsenic (As), monomethylarsenate (MMA) and dimethylarsenate (DMA), have historically been used as herbicides and pesticides. Because of their large application to agriculture fields and the toxicity of MMA and DMA, the distribution, speciation, and sorption of methylated As to soils requires investigation. Monomethylarsenate and DMA were reacted with a soil up to one year un...

Synchrotron X-Ray Based Investigation of As and Fe Bonding Environment in Collard Green Tissue Samples at Different Growth Stages

The arsenic and iron environments in different growth stages have been studied with EXAFS and XANES using Brookhaven Synchrotron Light Source. Collard Greens plants were grown and tissue samples were harvested. The project studied the EXAFS and XANES of tissue samples using As and Fe K-edges. The Fe absorption and the Fourier transform bond length information were used as a control comparison. ...
